Musical Myths: Who Killed Rock?
I’ve linked it in the sidebar there, but I have to say something about my favorite piece of music journalism ever. It’s not because I agree with everything it says either. In fact, it trashes some of my favorite bands and even entire genres, which I’m always against doing. But the overall premise is so on, I’ve been paraphrasing it since I read it maybe 5+ years ago, it’s relevance sadly undiminished. Respect due and all that.
I’m a bit hung up on his definition of “art”, I think any non-survival-based activity could count as “art”, that certainly includes all music. But, in context, you know what he’s talking about, so roll with it. This will certainly resonate with any J-poppers, he even gets halfway there himself by the end. Unless you were never into rock at all. And never heard it. Or heard about it.
Never know with people.
