Oh, it’s internets.
Is real life more serious? No. If nobody died, let’s keep things moving.
Momus (not Momusu, not Mom) has been writing a ton of great stuff lately. I like when him and Marxy go at it. There’s been a period the last few months when I’ve agreed with Momus much more than before, but he’s back on hating rock again, so I feel a little more at ease. I’m not sure how to put it. He’s a professional writer of course, so he’s much better at saying it. And not having some kind of urge to rock out is probably a benefit in this area. I’ve gotten more into his music than before too, he posted all his early albums on the blog I hadn’t heard, it’s good stuff. I’d like to able to do those kinds of songs, but it’s not really in me. Maybe I come close to his writing style in essay form when I’m doing well, but writing is mostly academic or comedic to me and music is more about catharsis.
The Cage/Branca dispute is really important to me. I love both. If you’ve been reading this blog and haven’t figured out most of my biggest “heroes” are weird loners whose critical and popular reception ranges from overwhelmingly negative to mixed…I just told you. Exceptions, whatever. Cage I respect as a philosopher for day-to-day life. And the guy was a peach. Listen to him talk. I am not so fuzzy maybe (in this regard). He was a natural easy breezy type and his environment and circumstance didn’t put him through any kind of wringer as it were. (Until the end, but he was old, right…RIP.) Anyhow, not everybody’s got this disposition or situation. It’s stupid to keep saying things like this, or at least it is for me anyway. Who the hell am I? (I know, you don’t; vice versa, unless you are at least Momus-famous, which may not be very, but if we are “friends” I should probably know you better than Momus who I’ve never met.) Extreme music like Branca’s is a reaction to or interpretation of internal or external stress. It’s what keeps you from joining some weird suicide cult, becoming a serial killer, heavy drug abuser, or retail worker. Religion can function in this way for some people, but it takes a lot of mental gymnastics to get to something “pure” from all that. Music is just sound. Extreme internal emotion, whatever causes it requires extreme external manifestations. Then, it’s something outside of you and you can deal with it. Artists making art they are happy with, however fucked up it is, are always more normal people in my experience than anybody else. There’s very few “artists” in the loony bin, or “crazy people” in the art or music world. The exceptions are people no one wants to deal with. It’s not the ideal or even the advantage.
What I’m trying to say here is, oranges.
